This chart is designed to help students and parents understand the educational and physical expectations and/or recommendations for the CAP Building Trades Maintenance program at Lehigh Career & Technical Institute.

Program Safety & Physical Considerations

  •  High degree of self-discipline and focus needed for safety in and around moving equipment, hand tools, power tools, and other equipment found in the industry
  • Coordination ability to adjust actions in relation to other actions
  • Physical strength and stamina with the ability to lift 50 pounds
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions, have no fear of heights or working in closed spaces
  • Ability to learn and work in environments including various chemical and wood smells and with dust, dirt, and debris, loud and sometimes startling noises, ongoing background noise, moving people and construction equipment, small spaces, interior or exterior work factors/environmental factors, scaffolding and ladders

 Essential Aptitudes Recommended

  • Manual and finger dexterity
  • Multi-level coordination while standing, sitting or lying down
  • Arm-hand steadiness
  • General body coordination and stamina that requires considerable use of arms, legs, and whole body
  • Eye/hand coordination
  • Color discrimination
  • Form perception
  • Spatial acuity

Reading & Language Arts Levels

  • 10th and 11th grade reading level (text and manuals)
  • Technical writing skills

Math Level

  • Basic math skills
  • Basic Geometry
  • Ability to calculate materials using floor plans, elevations, and sectional plans
  • Ability to apply construction geometry; calculate board and square feet, linear, square, and cubic measures
  • Connects fractions, decimals and percentages
  • Ability to perform electrical math
  • Ability to do precise measuring skills
  • Able to use ruler

Industry Certifications

  • Students will have the opportunity to earn industry certifications in the program

Cooperative Education

  • Students who meet all the requirements, including teacher recommendation, grades, attendance, and discipline record
  • Students must provide their own transportation to and from the job site
