Lehigh Career & Technical Institute students finished in first and second place March 3 at the annual American Welding Society Student Welding Contest.
Dean Wieder, of Southern Lehigh High School, won the contest and Gavin Marsolick, of Whitehall High School, was the runner-up. The society celebrated the boys’ achievements during a March 28 banquet in Hellertown that featured national AWS President John Bray. The society’s Lehigh Valley section organized the contest, which was held at Northampton Community College (Bethlehem Township, Pa.) and drew competitors from six local career and technical schools, including LCTI. The event consisted of several performance challenges that required participants’ to use a variety of welding processes.
For his first-place finish, Wieder received a $1,000 NCC scholarship, a Lincoln Electric welding machine, a Miller auto-darkening welding helmet and a free Welding Training & Testing Institute certification exam. For his second-place finish, Marsolick received a Real Gear welding machine, oxy-fuel equipment and a free Welding Training & Testing Institute certification exam.
