All students eat free at LCTI

Beginning Monday, Aug. 29 — the first day of school — a free grab-and-go breakfast and a free hot lunch will be served in LCTI’s cafeterias. Breakfast is only available for morning session students.

Monday’s breakfast is a Smucker’s Uncrustables peanut butter and grape jelly sandwich, apple wedges, orange juice and milk. Lunch is a breaded chicken patty on a whole-grain roll, a turkey sub, yogurt with granola, seasoned corn, romaine salad, applesauce, an orange and grape juice.

Free meals are now available for all students at LCTI thanks to the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) of the National School Lunch Act. CEP allows schools to serve breakfast and lunch at no cost to all enrolled students without first collecting free and reduced-price lunch applications. Instead, schools that adopt CEP are reimbursed using a formula based on the percentage of students categorically eligible for free meals.

The provision promotes equity by cutting out-of-pocket costs for families and reducing the stigma associated with school meal programs. LCTI’s Joint Operating Committee members approved participation in CEP on Wednesday (Aug. 24) during their monthly meeting.

MySchoolBucks

For students who want seconds, all items listed on the breakfast and lunch menus are available for purchase a la carte. Beverages and snacks that don’t appear on the menus will be sold in the cafeterias, as well. Students can use cash or their MySchoolBucks account to buy food in the cafeteria.

MySchoolBucks is an online payment service that lets parents or guardians add money to their student’s meal account with a credit or debit card, eliminating the need to send cash or checks to school. Parents can also check account balances, set up low-balance alerts, schedule automatic payments and review recent purchases with the click of a button. MySchoolBucks offers a smartphone app that’s available for both Apple and Android devices, so parents can monitor their student meal accounts on the go.
