LCTI students among top finishers at welding contest

BETHLEHEM TWP., Pa. | Lehigh Career & Technical Institute students were among the top-four finishers March 9 at the annual Student Welding Contest organized by the American Welding Society’s Lehigh Valley chapter. Northampton Community College hosted the event, which featured performance challenges that required participants’ to use a variety of welding processes.

Dean Wieder, of Southern Lehigh High School, was the contest runner-up and Kyle Bortz, of Emmaus High School, nabbed fourth place. This is the third consecutive year that at least one of LCTI’s Welding Technology students finished in first or second at the contest. All the contest competitors, who hail from six local career and technical schools, were celebrated during a recent AWS banquet in Hellertown.

For his second-place finish, Wieder was presented with an auto-darkening welding helmet, a Lincoln Electric duffel bag filled with welding apparel, Miller welding gloves, a Welding Training & Testing Institute certification exam gift certificate and various Weiler welding tools. Bortz received an auto-darkening welding helmet, Miller welding gloves and various Weiler welding tools.
