More than 90 students to compete at SkillsUSA districts

SCHNECKSVILLE, Pa.Ninety-two students from nearly half of Lehigh Career & Technical Institute’s programs are slated to compete next week at the SkillsUSA Council District 11 Championships in Allentown.

The competition, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, typically draws hundreds of student participants from five counties to the Allentown Fairgrounds Agri-Plex. They compete in individual and team contests of knowledge or skill, ranging from automated service technician to welding fabrication. Lehigh Valley businesses sponsor the contests, which provide students with opportunities to test themselves in challenging scenarios that mimic the demands of a 21st-century workplace.

Students by school

All nine Lehigh County school districts will be represented at the event in the following numbers

  • Allentown Central Catholic High School: 2 students
  • Catasauqua High School: 4 students
  • Emmaus High School: 15 students
  • Home School: 3 students
  • Louis E. Dieruff High School: 2 students
  • Northern Lehgih High School: 3 students
  • Northwestern Lehigh High School: 12 students
  • Parkland High School: 23 students
  • Salisbury High School: 4 students
  • Southern Lehigh High School: 7 students
  • Whitehall High School: 7 students
  • William Allen High School: 10 students

Students by program

Twenty-three of LCTI’s 47 high school programs will be represented at the event. Thanks to a combination of individual and team competitions, the top-sending programs are:

  • Cosmetology: 7
  • Criminal Justice: 8
  • Health & Medical Scenes: 10

The Cosmetology program is also sending five models to districts for the Esthetics and Nail Care contests. Programs include the following four of LCTI’s five areas of study: Business & Communication Technology, Engineering & Advanced Manufacturing, Health & Human Services, and Industrial Technology.

Students by contest

LCTI will be represented in 45 contests during the event. Contests range from Automated Manufacturing, Building Construction and Cake Decorating to Nurse Assisting and Technical Drafting.

The competition is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 4 at Agri-Plex, 1998 Liberty St. in Allentown. It’s free and open to the public, so stop by to root for LCTI’s students. The snow date is Feb. 5.
