PA State Safety Inspector

PENNSYLVANIA SAFETY INSPECTION MECHANIC TRAINING PROGRAM

LCTI offers a PA state-mandated training program and test required for technicians to receive their state inspection license. Applicant must complete the lecture course, pass a written test and satisfactorily perform a complete inspection of a vehicle. Upon successful completion of these requirements, the applicant will receive a safety inspection certification card in approximately six to eight weeks from the ending class date. An optional three-hour tools class that provides hands-on use of measuring tools used for the state inspection is also available.

PREREQUISITE

  • Applicant must be 18 years of age
  • Applicant must have a valid state driver’s license
  • Applicant must have an understanding of basic auto mechanics, including brakes and alignment to succeed in this program

Thursday 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Saturday Tactile hands-on test scheduled by the instructor

PROGRAM COST

Category I (Basic Course)                $265.00
(Includes inspection of passenger cars, trucks 17,000 pounds or less and trailers less than 10,000 pounds)

Category I Tactile Retest                     $  40.00 

Addition of Category II                       $  100.00 (Must have Class “M” on valid license)
(Inspection of motorcycles – must take in conjunction with Category I or currently hold a safety inspection license)

 Addition of Category III                     $120.00
(Inspection of trucks over 17,000 pounds, trailers over 10,000 pounds and buses – must take in conjunction with Category I or currently hold a safety inspection license)

Addition of Category IV                      $  55.00 (Document Reviewer or Enhanced Vehicle Safety Inspection)

  • Document Reviewer
    This exam is available to anyone without a PA Safety Inspection License. This person would examine the documentations presented for titling purposes.  
  • Enhanced Vehicle Safety Inspection – (Must currently hold a PA Safety Inspection License)
    This exam is available to anyone with a PA Safety Inspection License. A mechanic with an Enhanced Vehicle Safety Inspection is able to inspect and certify vehicles, specifically those that require a branded title (i.e.: reconstructed, flood, or specially constructed vehicles) for compliance with safety and equipment regulations. 
    *After successful completion of the Enhanced Vehicle Safety Inspection course, the holder of this license automatically is an eligible Document Reviewer.
