SCHNECKSVILLE, Pa. | With fewer than three dozen American Veterinary Medical Association-accredited programs nationwide, veterinary school admission is notoriously competitive in the U.S.
Would-be veterinarians looking to get an edge should consider Animal Sciences at Lehigh Career & Technical Institute. The dual-enrollment program is also a good fit for students interested in the following career paths.
High school seniors get a head start on college with biology, veterinary technology and veterinary terminology courses at LCCC. Plus, they’re exposed to various animal-centric occupations through job shadows, hands-on skills training and clinical study.
In a typical week, students split their time between immersion in the curriculum at LCTI, their college courses and shadowing professionals at Lehigh Valley Zoo, Macungie Animal Hospital and various facilities in the region. The curriculum includes caring for the program’s gerbils, guinea pigs and rabbits, as well as pet clinics with school staffers’ animals.
Along with being a Lehigh County resident in the Class of 2025, applicants must have a grade-point average of 2.5 or better, have excellent attendance, have completed biology, have completed math courses through geometry, have a written recommendation from their science teacher or guidance counselor and meet academic prerequisites for Lehigh Carbon Community College. LCTI is accepting applications through Friday, Jan. 5, 2024.
