Class of 2022: Whitehall senior wins top LCTI award

Trang Phung shows her Outstanding Career & Technical Education Senior Award during Senior Recognition Night 2022.

ALLENTOWN, Pa. | The Outstanding Career & Technical Education Senior Award is Lehigh Career & Technical Institute’s most prestigious accolade. Students selected to receive it are the best of the best at LCTI.

One of this year’s two Outstanding Career & Technical Education Senior Award winners is Trang Phung, a Whitehall High School student in the Electromechanical/ Mechatronics Technology program. Director of Career & Technical Education Darin Van Norman honored Trang on Tuesday (May 31, 2022) at PPL Center during the school’s Class of 2022 Senior Recognition Night

Teachers Gregory Merchlinsky and Lisa Heineman describe Trang as a young woman who sets a high bar for herself and clears it every time.

As a freshman, her long-term goals were qualifying for LCTI’s cooperative education program and representing the school at SkillsUSA District 11 Championships. Earlier this year, Trang placed first in Industrial Motor Control at districts, which earned her a trip to the state competition. And she is currently getting rave reviews from her co-op employer, East Penn Manufacturing.

Her teachers say Trang is a leader and a mentor in the classroom. And as a nontraditional student in Electromechanical/Mechatronics, she sets a wonderful example for all students, but especially younger girls who may be considering a similar career path.

Trang is an avid snowboarder and a member of Whitehall High’s Ski Club, as well as the National Honor Society and the Science National Honor Society. She plans to pursue a degree in electromechanical engineering at Temple University next fall.
