Engineers are the world’s problem solvers. Students learn how they combine scientific knowledge with technical skill to find solutions in our Pre-Engineering & Engineering Technology program. As students prepare to pursue careers and college degrees in engineering, they’re introduced to the following skills:
- Using Solidworks, SmartDraw, NI Multisim, Mastercam and Autodesk Inventor software
- Measuring voltage, amperage and resistance; building series and parallel circuits
- Connecting and operating mechanical power transmission and fluid power systems
- Programming and operating computer numerical control or CNC machines
Instruction begins with schematics, iterative design, modeling and other fundamentals before advancing to computer-assisted manufacturing, energy conversion and total quality control, for example. Students grow their knowledge and skill in a high-tech program lab outfitted with 3D printers, Amatrol trainers and a laser cutter.
Collaboration and project-based learning are important elements of the program, too. Working in teams, students design a public water system, build an autonomous VEX® robot and assemble a hovercraft. Along the way, they gain a better understanding of everything from engineering notation to kinematics. Upperclassmen routinely participate in LCTI’s rotational internship program and companies like H.T. Lyons often recruit them for co-op positions that lead to employment after high school or college.
